There is no greater friend of public education in the Borough of Middlesex than the Middlesex Elks Lodge #1488. For over fifty years, the Middlesex Elks has supported the public education of our youth through a variety of activities.
The Middlesex Elks sponsor “Student of the Month” awards for each of the schools in our district, as well as, hosting an awards night to publicly honor these outstanding students.
Every year the Elks host a “Youth Week” program, during which the students of Middlesex Borough shadow leaders for a day in civic and educational areas including the Mayor and Town Council, as well as, the Board of Education members. Students see hands on, how local leaders make important contributions to their communities.
In cooperation with Middlesex Public Schools, the Elks promote the PRIDE and PEER Leadership organizations through sponsorship for students to attend conferences, the Hoop and Soccer Shoots programs.
The Lodge has a deep commitment to the Special Needs Children in the district. Just this past year, the Elks sponsored a brand new sports program called “Buddy Ball” which was geared for students with both physical and cognitive disabilities. The program paired a special needs child with a high school student to play various sports such as softball, basketball, and soccer. This program was an overwhelming success for all participants and continues to this day. The Lodge also sponsors a yearly poster contest for the Special Needs Students of Middlesex.
While these many activities show the Middlesex Elks Lodge 1488 commitment to the students of Middlesex, nothing compares to the amount of Scholarships the lodge offers to the students of Middlesex High School. In addition the to the scholarships that are offered from the National and State Elks Associations, several thousands of dollars come from the local Lodge 1488 itself.
These acts show how committed the Elks have been towards the students of Public Education. The MEA is so proud and happy for the Middlesex Elks Lodge 1488 in receiving the MCEA Friend of Public Education award.
The MCEA, Friend of Public Education Celebration Dinner, will be held at the Pines Manor on May 17th. If you would like to attend, please refer to MEA Blast sent on May 1st or contact your Building Rep.
